Jazz Band

(Open to all students in grade 6-8 with 1 year playing experience on their instrument)

Main Objective- Students will study and perform various music styles including jazz, blues, latin, rock, pop, soul, funk, etc. Students will learn skills of improvisation and methods of performance, including phrasing, interpretation of swing rhythms, and alternate ways to articulate and interpret notated music.

Course Overview- Students begin rehearsals in January after winter break concludes. By the end of the school year the students should have a working knowledge of the following concepts and skills-

  • Performance knowledge of various styles of music and ability to identify and differentiate each style
  • Knowledge of various dynamic & articulation markings specific to jazz, and ability to perform each on instrument (ghosting, scoops, back-accenting, etc.)
  • Ability to create an improvised solo without written music (improv)
  • Ability to perform with a rhythm section, and without the aid of a conductor at times
