Administration of Emergency Allergy Medication, Asthma Medication, or Opioid Antagonists
Pursuant to Illinois law, Komarek School District 94 (the “District”) voluntarily maintains a supply of undesignated epinephrine auto-injectors, asthma medication, and opioid antagonists for use in an emergency, pursuant to a standing protocol issued by a licensed physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse. A school nurse or other trained personnel may administer an undesignated epinephrine injector to a person whom he or she in good faith believes is having an anaphylactic reaction, an opioid antagonist to any person whom he or she in good faith believes is having an opioid overdose, or undesignated asthma medication to any person whom he or she in good faith believes to be experiencing respiratory distress, in school, at a school-sponsored activity, under the supervision of school personnel, before or after normal school activities, or while being transported by a school bus.
Parents/guardians must read and approve this release and waiver on a yearly basis - this is completed during initial and returning student registration. In order to opt-out from administration of one or all of these medications, parents/guardians must submit a written request stating that their student shall not be administered any or all of the aforementioned drugs under any circumstances, and submit this request to the School Nurse on or before the first day of school each school year.
Please contact the School Nurse with any questions about undesignated medications or the opt-out procedure.
